Project Interview Bible

Your project is your strongest interview asset as a student. Technical rounds often spend 15โ€“30 minutes on it. This section helps you explain it clearly at any depth.

Why This Matters

Interviewers ask about your project to check:

  • Did you actually build it (or just clone a tutorial)?
  • Do you understand the architecture you chose?
  • Can you talk about tradeoffs and what youโ€™d improve?
  • Will you be able to contribute on day one?

A mediocre project explained well beats an impressive project explained poorly.

Study Order

  1. Read how-to-explain-your-project.md and write your 2-minute pitch today
  2. Fill in each topic file for YOUR project (architecture, auth, DB, etc.)
  3. Read sample-project-explanations.md to see what โ€œgoodโ€ looks like
  4. Practice mock-project-interview.md with a friend
  5. Before every interview: rehearse your 2-min pitch out loud

The Project Explanation Formula

Every good project explanation includes:

  1. Problem โ€” What problem does it solve? For whom?
  2. Solution โ€” What did you build? Demo in one sentence.
  3. Tech stack โ€” Why these choices?
  4. Your role โ€” What did YOU specifically do?
  5. Challenge โ€” One hard problem you solved.
  6. Result โ€” Users, metrics, or what you learned.
  7. Next step โ€” What youโ€™d improve (shows growth mindset).

Before Every Interview

  • 2-minute pitch rehearsed out loud
  • Can draw architecture on whiteboard in 2 minutes
  • Know your hardest bug and how you fixed it
  • Have project deployed and ready to screen-share
  • GitHub repo is clean (README, no secrets in code)

Time Estimate

  • Write your pitch + fill topic files: 2โ€“3 hours (one sitting)
  • Practice mock interview: 1 hour with a friend
  • Maintenance: Update after major project changes

N+1 Query Visualizer

Press Run and watch an innocent ORM loop fire query after sequential query โ€” then run the JOIN and watch one bar do the same work in a fraction of the time.

The ORM fetches the post list โ€” one innocent query.

Double-Booking Race

Two buyers, one seat, 80 milliseconds apart. Watch the oversell happen โ€” then turn on the row lock and watch the database say no.

Both transactions read: A saw 1, B saw โ€ฆ โ€” the same seat.
